Access Statement for Beech House 40 Greenside Kendal Cumbria
Introduction
Beech House is a bed and breakfast guest house with 6 double ensuite bedrooms. All the bedrooms are either 1st or 2nd floor rooms. The bedrooms have bathrooms with either showers (walk in) or baths (in the 2 deluxe rooms only). Beech House is situated in a pleasant area just 5 minutes walk from the town centre. The route to the town centre is quite steep, there are taxi's and busses that could provide transport if required.

We can help you with public transport information and more detailed information is available from Kendal Tourist Information Centre telephone number 01539 725758. There is a shop mobility scheme in Kendal town centre that is only 10 minutes walk away. Beech House is suitable for guests with sight and hearing impairment but not for guests with mobility impairment.
Arrival & Car Parking Facilities
We have a small car park with spaces for 3 cars at the rear of the property, there is further road side parking available with permits available from reception. Assistance can be provided from the car park or kerbside. Guide dogs only can be accommodated within the building. The route from the car park to the entrance is on a gradual slope with a small step into the front garden and 2 steps up to the front entrance. The path is reasonably well lit.
Main Entrance, Reception & Ticketing Area
There is only one entrance to the guest house and that is at the front of the building. If assistance is required it should be requested in advance. There is no loop system within the building. A pad and pen is available on request. There is seating in the reception area. The door to the entrance is a traditional swing/hinge door. There is a hand rail on the left hand side of the stair case going up stairs, there is no lift within the building. There are no stairs to the reception although the main staircase does go directly up from the reception. Assistance is requested by a bell in reception by the foot of the staircase.
Public Areas - Hall, Stairs, Landing, Corridors etc
The ground floor area is on the level and consists of a lounge breakfast room and reception area. There is a main stair case leading to the bedrooms on the first and second floors. The staircase consists of a first flight of 11 steps with a 20cm drop. A short flight of 3 steps leads off to bedroom 3 (Serpentine). There is a second flight from the main first flight leading to all the other rooms with 5 stairs at 20cm drop. These stairs lead directly to bedroom 4 (Low Tenterfell) and 5 (Greenside) and indirectly to the other 3 bedrooms. The staircase from the first floor to the next level consists of 10 stairs again with a 20cm drop, these stairs lead to a landing with a further 2 stairs at 20cm drop leading off to bedroom 6 (Garden Room). The final flight of stairs with 7 stairs leads directly to bedrooms 7 (High Tenterfell) and bedroom 8 (Penthouse).
Public Areas - Sitting room, lounges, lobbies etc
The public areas consist of lounge, breakfast room and corridors between bedrooms. The lounge and breakfast room being interconnected with access from reception is all on the level. The corridors are the same widths as the staircases and clear from furniture. The red stair carpet gives a clear definition between the white skirting boards and papered walls.

There are no ground floor public toilets
Bedrooms & Sleeping Areas
All the bedrooms are ensuite without any steps between the bedrooms and bathrooms. The 4 classic bedrooms have walk in showers. All the classic bedrooms have double beds. The 2 deluxe rooms have bathrooms with baths and king size beds.

Additional Information
Beech House has a non smoking policy through out it's rooms. Guests are welcome to smoke in the garden areas. In the event of a fire a siren will sound and all guest must make their way down the stair case and across the road to the green opposite.
